Okay – not really “dead” – but not as we ‘know it’, either. They’re moving to Sundays.

Our favorite cheerful watermelonie Linden displays obvious goodwill and passion in his day-to-day and always seems to have a large smile, a chuckle and upbeat humor for all residents fortunate enough to run across his (or in-world sometimes: her) path.

Of course, when there are issues with the grid, people will use the talkback posts of the blog to rant and vent, but unlike many other announcements, the majority of talkbacks to Torley’s posts are overwhelmingly positive.

“All the world is a mirror” – you will take what you give and fortunately for everyone, Torley always give bucket-loads of cheer and “friendly greetings”.

Even in the face of “bad news” – which is really just good news in disguise:

“The Tip of the Week is moving from ~Thursday to Sundays! Why? It’s because: (1) I’m timecrushed during the week, (2) I observe some potentially worthwhile trends in video viewership metrics, and (3) I want to add variety to weekends on this blog amidst service updates. This is an experimental change and it starts next week on May 6, so I apologize there’s no TotW this week.”

This is actually a nice reprieve for me, because I am recording the Torley tutorials to DVD and it’s a lot of work to 1): arrange them so they make sense – beginner tips, interface tips, building tips, etc. Then, reencoding them into proper DVD format – then the actual authoring. It also looks like it will be several DVD’s. When completed, I will be sending them off to Torley, via Linden Lab. So if you want copies – ask them. :)

It’s up to Torley (and Linden Lab) if they want to make ‘image’ files of these available for residents to download. I don’t care. Doing it more for myself (the entertainment value alone is worth the work) – and so I’ll throw copies in his direction.

My whole point is – if you haven’t seen a TorleyTute, you really don’t know what you’re missing. Just the sheer cheer is worth a great ‘pick-me-up’ when the ‘grid is down’.

Hey, thanks, Torley… and remember, even with the sometimes vicious rants that appear in the talkbacks – the majority can’t help but luv-ya!

  1. Ari, just wanted to say a very GRACIOUS PERSONAL THANKYOU for your continued support. I really really appreciate you blogging about my video tutorials.

Bad stuff happens by itself. But good stuff doesn’t necessarily — which is why I continue to uplift and amplify awesomeness in Second Life!

When you get the DVD images up, let me know, I do want to check them out firsthand… *totally*! I’m thankful for you working on spreading the word, and look forward to the copies.

    More TorleyTutes to come… !

  2. Thank you, Torley, your feedback really means a lot.
And most certainly I have every intention to pass the DVDs to you first and only, and I would never pass them on to anyone else. Hence, my comment “you will have to talk to them” – meaning yourself and Linden lab (if you choose to allow them to be distributed). In truth, I make them for me as the entertainment value alone is priceless. I thought it only right to forward copies to you.

I hope you understand they do take a while to create as I am not working with master files – the the conversion back into 3:2:2 pulldown and NTSC Standard is what takes so long. ;)

I intend to mail them to you, care of Linden Lab (via the published contact address) – and I’ll let you know when I do, so if they don’t make it into your hands – I’ll find another way.

As for my comments here, I agree with many Linden Lab’s policies are a bit frustrating at times and the grid can be quite the nightmare. However, I also know you and all the other Lindens are human and just trying to do your jobs and most of you there must be at least somewhat as passionate as the residents or you wouldn’t take the abuse you receive.

So, I hope to at least help provide a voice reason and what should be common sense… perhaps a bit of balance and to let all of you there know that there really are people out here who understand what you are doing, the difficulty of your job and that you are not Gods in such a way that everything always goes right all the time.

Seriously, thank YOU for becoming such a cheerful, happy-go-lucky “face” of Linden lab. I think it really helps with a lot of the frustration many people feel. Of course, there always will be the die-hard naysayers. :)

Finally a blog without vicious ranting and raving about everything LL does. Its unusual and refreshing to see for a change. Keep up the good work Ari.

Also great job in the videos Torley even after being here for over 2 years now I have learned a few things from them.

  4. Thank you, Kenny.

Like most in Second Life, I enjoy the news and updates – it really is a whole other world unto itself.

Surfing the blogs I usually find a few typical categories: the fashion blogs (okay, I’m a guy – blue jeans and t-shirt do it for me. Done) LOL – Then there’s the “my products pages – read to see what I am working on now so you can buy it” blogs. I even have one of these, but don’t take it seriously.

Then there are the ‘news’ blogs. Acting like newspapers – but much of their stuff is specifically designed to rile you up. Creates knee-jerk reactions to alarmist columns. I refer to these as tabloids.

Then there are the serious ‘commentary’ blogs. Like Tateru Nino and Nobody Fugazi. They are very good and insightful. Unfortunately, to me, they seem to always focus on the negative (your2ndplace). Well, bad news sells, I guess.

Tetaru’s posts are short and to the point and highly neutral – she does a real outstanding job over at Massively/

I wanted to create something that is a lot more objective and middle-of-the-road, but commentary as well. I’ll chastise Linden lab where needed. But I also want to espouse the positive as well.

After all, everyone related to Second Life – resident or Linden – are human. It’s easy to be negative. It’s far more difficult to look for the positive. In fact, if you look at the older posts here on this blog, you’ll see this blog was no different from most of the others.

Torley inspired me to look to the positive. It happens when there are negative comments to his posts when he is such a happy, positive guy. I want to look past all the negatives and focus on the positives in his posts. So I wrote about that.

    …and you know what?
It felt damned good to do it. :)

So, Torley – thank YOU. See? You have far more positive effect on people than you realize. ;)

I agree with you Ari that it a lot harder to look for the positive. While I don’t always agree with LL’s decisions and grumble at times when things arn’t working right overall with out them we wouldnt have this world and I love it warts and all. While I believe that people have the right to voice their opinons there is a way to do it in an adult manner without all the viciousness and name calling as in the official blog comments and still get ones point across.

I have been here long enough to have seen the days when 8k people in world would crash the grid, months in a row of griefer attacks crashing the grid 3 to 4 days a week and also weeks in a row where I never crashed once. The grid has grown larger and faster then I believe they planned for or expected so now its a try to catch up situation. But overall for myself anyways it runs better then when I started with ten times as many residents online.
